Why Do Letters of Recommendation Matter?

Most colleges ask for 1 – 3 letters of recommendation. These are typically coming from:

When to Ask? 

The best time to start thinking about recommendation letters is your Junior year spring semester or summer before your Senior year of high school. That gives your recommenders plenty of time to write a letter before applications open on August 1st. Advance planning also ensures you won’t be scrambling during the busiest part of application season.

How to Ask for a Letter of Recommendation

Now that we’ve covered why these letters are important and when to start, let’s go through the best way to make your letter of recommendation requests. 

1. Choose the Right People

Select people who actually know you well and can speak to your strengths. Think about:

• -Teachers from Junior or Sophomore year
  
• -Someone in a subject related to your intended major
  
• -Adults who’ve mentored you in clubs, sports, church, or volunteer work
  

2. Ask in Person

It’s always best to ask face-to-face if you can. Be polite, respectful, and clear about what you’re asking. 

Here’s an example of how to approach your recommender: 

“I’m applying to college this fall and would really appreciate a letter of recommendation from you. I’ve enjoyed your class and feel like you’ve seen how much I’ve grown as a student.”

3. Give Them Your College Resume 

Help your recommender write a stronger letter by giving them a quick summary of your accomplishments, extracurriculars, goals, and what you hope to study in college. This allows them to include these details in their letter!

4. Send a Thank You

After they’ve submitted your letter, send a handwritten note or a thoughtful email thanking them. Gratitude goes a long way and can help maintain a strong relationship for future reference requests.
