student\u2019s readiness for college-level work. Highly selective institutions look for students who challenge<\/p>\n\n\n\n
themselves with demanding coursework and demonstrate their ability to excel through both academic
performance and strong work ethic.
So, what courses should students consider taking? Below are the five top classes that can enhance their
college applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many competitive colleges look for students who take a foreign language for all four years. Advanced
courses such as AP Spanish, AP French, or IB Language Studies show linguistic proficiency and
cultural awareness. While four years of a foreign language may not be required by your high school,
don\u2019t skip these classes. We recommend studying one language for four years to achieve proficiency,
rather than attempting two languages without mastering either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Highly selective colleges expect students to take math courses beyond Algebra II. Advanced coursework
such as AP Calculus AB signal strong analytical and problem-solving skills. If your school offers it, AP
Statistics is another beneficial math course to take. Even if you don\u2019t plan to major in STEM, taking an
advanced math course demonstrates perseverance in a challenging subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Selective colleges appreciate applicants who demonstrate an understanding of historical and

and Composition. We know our STEM students won\u2019t love reading this, but every college will require an
English or writing class so these classes are important for college preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While these five classes can strengthen your application, the key is to challenge yourself within your
school\u2019s available curriculum. We work with students who attend high schools of various sizes, including
small schools that do not offer all of these advanced courses. Don\u2019t worry if these are not available – just
be sure to take the most rigorous courses available to you to demonstrate your intellectual curiosity and
potential.
The most challenging part? It is crucial to achieve A’s in these courses to be considered for admission to
highly selective colleges and universities.
