Choosing how and when to apply to college can be just as important as where you apply. As college admissions become more competitive, understanding Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision can help you develop a smart, strategic plan and improve your chances of getting into your top-choice schools.
As Class 101 advisors, it’s our job to know the options and develop the best strategy for our students. Let’s discuss the key differences between these application types, the pros and cons of each, and how to decide which option is best for you or your child.
Early Decision (ED) is a binding agreement between a student and a college. That means if you apply ED and are accepted, you must attend that school and withdraw all other college applications. No exceptions.
Here are the pros of ED:
Here are the cons:
Early Decision is best for students who have researched thoroughly, visited campuses, and know exactly where they want to go.
When you apply ED, you sign a binding agreement stating that if you’re accepted you will attend that college and withdraw all other applications. This agreement is also signed by your parent/guardian and your school counselor, so it’s not just a student promise, it’s a formal understanding between you, your family, your school, and the college. If accepted, you must immediately withdraw applications to other colleges. Admissions offices communicate with each other, and they take ED commitments seriously.

Early Action (EA) allows students to apply early, usually by November 1, and receive a decision earlier than the Regular Decision timeline. Unlike Early Decision, Early Action is non-binding, so you’re free to apply to multiple colleges and compare offers.
Here are the pros:
Here are the cons:
Early Action is best for students who want an admissions edge but still want flexibility in choosing where to enroll. We ensure that all Class 101 students apply early action.
Regular Decision (RD) is the traditional application timeline and the one most students follow, but it is not an option that we recommend. Applications are typically due in January, and students typically receive their decisions in March or April.
Here are the pros:
Cons:
Regular Decisions is best for students who need more time to prepare their strongest application, are unsure of the colleges they want to apply to, or who want to keep all options open.

When choosing between Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision, ask yourself:
Every student’s situation is different and that’s why personalized guidance matters.
