Early Decision vs. Early Action vs. Regular Decision, Oh My!

Choosing how and when to apply to college can be just as important as where you apply. As college admissions become more competitive, understanding Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision can help you develop a smart, strategic plan and improve your chances of getting into your top-choice schools.

As Class 101 advisors, it’s our job to know the options and develop the best strategy for our students. Let’s discuss the key differences between these application types, the pros and cons of each, and how to decide which option is best for you or your child.

What Is Early Decision?

Early Decision (ED) is a binding agreement between a student and a college. That means if you apply ED and are accepted, you must attend that school and withdraw all other college applications. No exceptions.

  • -Deadline: Usually November 1 or November 15
  • -Decision Released: Mid-December

Here are the pros of ED:

  • -Demonstrates strong interest and commitment, which can boost your chances at selective schools!
  • -You’ll receive your admission decision early, which can help ease stress during senior year and remove the uncertainty and wait, especially if this is your top-choice college.

Here are the cons:

  • -It’s binding. You must enroll in this college.
  • -You can’t compare financial aid offers from other schools. This is a big con for many students.
  • -You must have a clear top-choice school and be ready to commit.

Early Decision is best for students who have researched thoroughly, visited campuses, and know exactly where they want to go.

When you apply ED, you sign a binding agreement stating that if you’re accepted you will attend that college and withdraw all other applications. This agreement is also signed by your parent/guardian and your school counselor, so it’s not just a student promise, it’s a formal understanding between you, your family, your school, and the college. If accepted, you must immediately withdraw applications to other colleges. Admissions offices communicate with each other, and they take ED commitments seriously.

What Is Early Action?

Early Action (EA) allows students to apply early, usually by November 1, and receive a decision earlier than the Regular Decision timeline. Unlike Early Decision, Early Action is non-binding, so you’re free to apply to multiple colleges and compare offers.

  • -Deadline: Typically November 1
  • -Decision Released: December or January

Here are the pros:

  • -You get an early admission decision without the pressure of committing
  • -You get more time to review financial aid packages and scholarships
  • -This shows colleges that you’re organized and serious about your application

Here are the cons:

  • -Some colleges offer Restricted or Single-Choice Early Action, which limits you from applying early elsewhere
  • -EA requires strong time management to have essays, recommendations, and test scores ready early (never a problem for Class 101 students!)

Early Action is best for students who want an admissions edge but still want flexibility in choosing where to enroll. We ensure that all Class 101 students apply early action.

What Is Regular Decision?

Regular Decision (RD) is the traditional application timeline and the one most students follow, but it is not an option that we recommend. Applications are typically due in January, and students typically receive their decisions in March or April.

  • -Deadline: Usually January 1–15
  • -Decision Released: March or April

Here are the pros:

  • -Allows more time to strengthen your grades, essays, and extracurriculars if needed
  • -Allows more time to apply to colleges if you are not ready to apply early
  • -Full opportunity to compare financial aid and scholarship offers

Cons:

  • -You’ll have to wait longer for your decision
  • -The applicant pool can be larger and more competitive
  • -Scholarship dollars can be gone by the time you apply

Regular Decisions is best for students who need more time to prepare their strongest application, are unsure of the colleges they want to apply to, or who want to keep all options open.

How to Decide Which Option Is Right for You

When choosing between Early Decision, Early Action, and Regular Decision, ask yourself:

  • -Do I have a clear first-choice college?
  • -Is my academic profile (GPA, test scores, extracurriculars) already as strong as it can be?
  • -Do I want to compare financial aid packages before committing?
  • -Am I prepared to meet earlier deadlines?

Every student’s situation is different and that’s why personalized guidance matters.
