We\u2019re taking the time to write this blog to tell you that this essay might be one of the most important things you submit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Class 101 Brandon, we help our students craft authentic, compelling essays that reflect who they are and what matters most to them. A great college essay can make the difference between being accepted or passed over, especially when test scores and GPAs are similar. An awesome college essay can be the difference maker in being selected for a scholarship, or not. Admissions officers read hundreds, if not thousands, of applications each year, so it\u2019s important to stand out and tell your story.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We think essays are a big deal, so let\u2019s talk about how to approach your college essay with confidence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Understand the Prompt<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Before writing anything, make sure you fully understand what the essay prompt is asking. Common Application prompts often ask about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>-A meaningful experience or challenge<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>-A moment of personal growth<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>-Something you\u2019re passionate about<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>-An obstacle you\u2019ve overcome<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The best prompt is the one that allows you to tell an interesting story about yourself, providing insight into who you are and the characteristics or skills you\u2019ll bring to that college campus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Brainstorm the Right Story<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong college essay starts with reflection. Looking at the prompt or prompt options, start making a list of stories you could share about yourself that answer the prompt. Which story allows the reader to get to know you?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need a dramatic story. Essays about small, meaningful moments can be incredibly powerful when written with honesty and heart. Most importantly, be sure your story is genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfQEdiJgk01lonP6nJp0v5_bpXXQQ5LM2Rgnw2GF5Y5KSD2VlwymKobtfoe7d1qfPjg0gjbZ702EoVecNLcPLB9XxkVWUEsO7KricXWzaP__WE5Ix2CSLLAGfTx1dk18ajUOgskkA?key=XUdA-YQBvzjDa1vyhXTJ0Q\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:627px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Create a Simple Outline<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like any essay you write for school, it\u2019s best to keep it focused and start with an outline. Here\u2019s a common structure for personal essays:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Hook<\/em> \u2013 A strong opening that grabs attention<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Background <\/em>\u2013 The context for your story<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Turning Point<\/em> \u2013 What happened and how you responded<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Reflection<\/em> \u2013 What you learned or how you\u2019ve grown<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Connection<\/em> \u2013 How this relates to your future goals and college plans<br><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Write in Your Voice<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Admissions officers want to hear your voice, not a perfect version of what you think they want to hear. Certainly not the voice of AI or an adult with a heavy edit to your essay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be afraid to be authentic and use conversational language, not big words you might find on the SAT but wouldn\u2019t normally use.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, don\u2019t just say what happened, explain why it mattered. Don\u2019t assume that the admissions officer knows how you felt or why this story is important &#8211; be descriptive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 5: Edit, Edit, Edit<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Great writing is rewriting. After your first draft, read your essay out loud to catch errors or awkward phrasing. Remove any sentences that don\u2019t serve your main point or add value (longer doesn\u2019t mean better &#8211; remember those other thousand essays the admissions officer is reading?).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After your edits, ask someone else to read your essay and share their feedback.
