Students are applying too late, applying to the wrong scholarships, or missing opportunities simply because no one explained how the process actually works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We think it\u2019s helpful to start by breaking down the three main types of scholarships and how to approach them strategically, since your time, and let\u2019s be honest, your teen\u2019s essay-writing-energy is limited.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Merit-Based Scholarships: <em>Scholarships You Earn<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Merit-based scholarships are awarded based on what a student has already accomplished in their high school career. Think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>-GPA and course rigor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>-SAT or ACT test scores<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>-Leadership, involvement, or special talents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These scholarships are often built right into the college application process. You\u2019ve heard your coworkers talk aboutscholarships from their companies or seen local nonprofits give them away. These come from local, regional, and national organizations.
