1. The SAT: What Is It?
The SAT is one of two standardized college admissions exams in the US and it’s given out seven times a year: March, May, June, August, October, November, and December. Students can take the SAT anytime starting in the 6th grade, but most opt to take it their junior year of high school, and possibly again in the fall of their senior year to increase their scores. 2. The SAT is Scored from 400 to 1,600
Scores on the SAT range from 400–1,600. The overall score is a combination of scores received in the reading and writing portion and the math portion, each ranging from 200-800. The average SAT score is 1068. Most elite schools ask for a score of 1500 or higher, while state colleges usually admit students with scores starting around 1050.
3. The SAT Has Four Sections
The SAT is split into four sections: reading, writing and language, math (no calculator), and math (yes calculator). It breaks down like this:
Reading: Reading and vocabulary in context.
Writing and Language: Grammar and usage.
Math (No Calculator): Heart of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, advanced math, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus.
Math (Yes Calculator): Same as above.
4. Sending Your Scores to Colleges: Four’s Free, More’s Money
Once you register for the SAT, you can pick up to four colleges to receive your scores at no charge. After you take the test, shipping your scores to more colleges comes with a fee — usually, around $11.25, although waivers are available based on income. You can also pay extra to rush your score to a school.
