\u201cI just don\u2019t want my student to be a number.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hear that sentence every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For families in Brookfield and Waukesha, it usually comes up when we are talking about large public universities. UW\u2013Madison. The University of Minnesota. Big campuses. Big lecture halls. Tens of thousands of students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fear is understandable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the phrase \u201cjust a number\u201d oversimplifies what is actually happening at large institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I worked in admissions, and later when I observed students once they enrolled, I saw something important. Students are not automatically anonymous at big schools. They become anonymous when they do not know how to engage the system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large universities operate differently. They require initiative. They reward curiosity. They provide scale. Within that scale, there are smaller communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honors programs create cohort experiences that feel much more intimate. Living learning communities group students by academic interest. Undergraduate research opportunities connect students directly with faculty. Advising offices are often structured around colleges or majors, not the entire institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, it would be na\u00efve to pretend that large campuses feel the same as smaller ones. Introductory courses may include hundreds of students. Professors may not know every name on the first day. The environment can feel overwhelming to students who prefer constant structure and individual attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not mean smaller colleges are automatically better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smaller institutions often provide built-in access to professors and leadership opportunities earlier. But they also offer fewer majors, fewer niche programs, and sometimes fewer layers of support in highly specialized areas. A small college cannot replicate the breadth of research opportunities available at a flagship public. A large university cannot replicate the constant familiarity of a 2,000-student campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real question is not whether a student will be \u201cjust a number.\u201d The real question is how that student operates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does your student thrive in environments where they advocate for themselves? Are they comfortable walking into office hours? Do they seek out opportunities independently? Large universities can be exceptional environments for students wired that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does your student prefer consistent mentorship, smaller discussion settings, and close faculty relationships from day one? A smaller campus may align more naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why list building during junior year matters so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When families dismiss large universities because of fear, or assume smaller automatically equals better support, they remove nuance from the conversation. Fit is not about size alone. It is about how a student engages within that size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have worked with students who flourished at UW\u2013Madison because they understood how to plug into honors programs, research labs, and campus organizations. I have also worked with students who chose smaller colleges and appreciated the immediate access to professors and leadership roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neither choice is inherently superior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal during junior year is to understand where your student will engage most fully. Campus visits should include conversations about honors options, advising structures, class sizes within intended majors, and how students access research or internships. Those details matter more than total enrollment numbers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are a current junior and building your college list, do not let size alone drive your decisions. Ask better questions. Evaluate how you operate. Visit strategically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are working with juniors right now to refine lists that balance fit, probability of admission, and probability of affordability. Our junior class is filling as families recognize that this stage of the process shapes senior year outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
