National Merit Scholarships: How to Qualify & Why It Matters

Every fall, high school Juniors in Bloomington and across the country take the PSAT/NMSQT. It’s a test that does more than just prepare students for the SAT. It’s also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, one of the most prestigious academic honors a high school student can achieve.

At Class 101 Bloomington, we guide families through this process every year. Understanding how it works and how your student can prepare can open doors to major scholarship opportunities and even full-tuition offers from top universities.

What Is the National Merit Scholarship Program?

The National Merit Scholarship Program recognizes the top-performing high school Juniors nationwide based on their PSAT scores. Roughly 1.3 million students take the PSAT each year, but only about 1% of them qualify as Semifinalists, a distinction that can lead to scholarships and major recognition on college applications.

Students who advance through the stages (Commended, Semifinalist, and Finalist) can earn:

  • National Merit Scholarships worth $2,500
  • Corporate-sponsored scholarships
  • College-sponsored full or partial tuition awards

Many colleges — including those in Indiana and across the country — use National Merit recognition as a way to recruit top academic talent, often offering automatic merit aid or honors college invitations. There are some serious benefits for students!

How Do Students Qualify?

To qualify, Juniors must take the PSAT in the fall of their Junior year. This typically occurs in October.

They will need to earn a high Selection Index Score which varies by state (you can find that specific information here). In Indiana, the cutoff is typically around 214–216, although it can vary from year to year.

Juniors must also meet academic and citizenship requirements to qualify.

This means preparation matters. A few points can make the difference between a strong score and National Merit recognition! At Class 101, we prepare Sophomores and Juniors through our Test Prep courses to set them up for success when they take the PSAT, giving them the best chance at qualifying.

Why the PSAT Matters for College Admissions

Being named a National Merit Semifinalist or Finalist can make your student stand out in competitive admissions. Colleges recognize it as a mark of academic excellence, discipline, and college readiness.

Even more importantly, the financial benefits can be substantial. We’ve seen some universities, including the University of Alabama, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Central Florida, offer full-tuition scholarships for National Merit Finalists. Others may offer stackable scholarships that significantly reduce college costs.

For Indianapolis-area families, this recognition can mean tens of thousands of dollars in savings and a major confidence boost during the college planning process.

Get Started Early

For families in Bloomington and the greater area, the key to National Merit success is starting early – ideally during sophomore year. That allows time for students to take practice tests, learn strategies, and feel confident before the PSAT/NMSQT in their Junior year.

If your student is aiming high, let’s make a plan together.
