How To Get Into Your Dream College

There are several factors that are important to getting into your dream college: GPA, SAT or ACT score, rigor of your high school curriculum, letters of recommendation and involvement. These are all well known for having an impact on admissions, but there is one factor that is never discussed, yet it is in the top 5 reasons students are admitted, and that is the topic of demonstrated interest.

What Is Demonstrated Interest?

According to a 2017 report from the National Association for College Admission Counseling, nearly 40% of colleges said that demonstrated interest was of moderate to considerable importance.

All colleges and universities want to improve their ‘yield rate’ which is the percentage of students that have been officially admitted who actually end up enrolling. Essentially, students must “demonstrate” to the admissions department of their dream school that if they are admitted they will actually attend the college.

Seems simple enough, right? Unfortunately, a good majority of students don’t take the time or put forth the effort to make this happen.

How Can I Demonstrate Interest?

There are several ways to demonstrate interest in the college of your choice. Sign up for an official campus tour and admissions presentation or other informational sessions during your Junior year

• Call and/or email your admissions advisor several times throughout your Junior and Senior year; contacting the admissions department can improve your chances of being accepted to your dream college

• Sign up for webinars conducted by the college or university

• Use supplemental essays to show your passion and knowledge of the school

• Attend overnight events on campus

• Return for follow-up visits to campus

• Schedule to meet professors in your chosen department; in-person interactions can help to demonstrate your sincere interest

• Interact with the school on social media
