It’s an understandable question. College decisions feel emotional, exciting, and sometimes urgent. But when it comes to accepting an offer, especially at a private college, timing matters.

At Class 101, our advice is simple and strategic: don’t accept an offer until you fully understand the financial picture.

Wait for the Final Offer Letter

Before accepting any college offer, students should receive their final financial aid offer letter, which clearly spells out:

• -Scholarships and grants
• -Loans (student and parent)
• -Out-of-pocket costs
• -The true cost of attendance
  

Until you have this information in writing, you don’t have the full story and you shouldn’t be making a final decision.

Why Accepting Too Early Can Cost You Money

Once a student officially accepts an offer, the college assumes the decision is final. At that point, families often lose any leverage they might have.

For private colleges in particular, there may still be room to request clarification, negotiate the financial aid offer, and even request additional merit- or need-based assistance. But that conversation typically happens before you say yes, not after. 

The Right Time to Talk to Financial Aid

After you’ve received your financial aid offer letter, this is the ideal time to schedule a meeting or call with the financial aid office. This is your opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about any awards you received or did not receive, share additional information or changes in your financial situation, and request the aid office to consider offering you additional assistance. It’s helpful to share if this is the first-choice school and any competing offers your student has.
