College Fairs can be an excellent introduction to start building the college list and talking about college as a family. In a low pressure environment, students are invited to pick up brochures and swag, to ask questions about majors or student life, and to sign up to receive additional information from colleges. We work with our Class 101 students who decide to attend a college fair to help them plan how to get the most out of the experience.

11th grade: Plan to spend time at the tables of five to ten schools on your list. It’s not necessary, but try to have one or two questions ready to ask. Everyone has different preferences for “college fit.” What are yours?

10th grade: Look at the College Fair list of schools and map out the schools that you know you want to see. Try to visit with at least one or two small schools, one or two medium schools, and one or two large and extra large schools. Notice the differences between them. And try to give yourself time to browse and discover new schools as well. Sign up to receive additional information from colleges.

9th grade: First College Fair?! Have fun! Grab a bag to collect college swag and stop at any college that looks interesting to you. Sign up to receive additional information from colleges. Don’t rush, and don’t feel self-conscious as a younger student. Remember, early engagement is a game changer and colleges want to meet you!

“Points” about Test Prep

Questions around test prep and college entrance exams can seem even more daunting than the questions on the exams themselves. While the test-optional option was in place at hundreds of colleges before the pandemic, the idea of being a “test-optional” candidate took hold since 2020. However, the State of Ohio makes it possible for every high school junior to take an ACT or SAT through their high school, so access to take a test is not an issue. Over the last few years, colleges that were test optional in 2020 announced that scores are now required.
