By the middle of August, most students are getting ready for senior year.

Schedules are coming out. Activities are starting to take shape. It feels like the college process is about to move into a more serious phase.

What I’ve seen over the years, working with students in Pewaukee, Johnson Creek, Milwaukee, and the surrounding communities, is that senior year doesn’t feel the same for everyone.

The difference isn’t ability. It’s how much of the work was done before school started.

When a student comes into senior year prepared, the process feels steady.

They already know where they are applying, or at least have a list that isn’t changing much. Testing is behind them, or there is a clear plan if one more attempt is needed. The essay isn’t perfect, but there is something in place that they can keep working on.

When applications open, they’re not trying to figure everything out. They’re moving through it. Filling in details. Writing supplements. Making adjustments where needed.

It’s still work, but it feels manageable.

I’ve also seen the other side of it.

Students come into senior year knowing they need to get started, but still trying to figure out where they’re applying, whether they should test again, and what they want to write about.

None of that is unusual. It just means everything is happening at once.

School starts. Activities pick up. Deadlines start to feel closer. The essay becomes something that needs to get done quickly instead of something that can be worked through.

The work itself isn’t harder. The timing is.

What tends to happen is that the fall becomes about building everything at the same time. The list is still shifting. The essay is still taking shape. Applications are being filled out as decisions are still being made.

It all gets done, but it doesn’t feel very controlled.

If you have a current senior in Racine, New Berlin, Brookfield, or nearby communities, this is a good point to take a step back and look at where things stand before the year really gets going.

Not in a critical way, just in a practical one.

Is the list in place in a way that makes sense?
Is testing something that’s already decided?
Is the essay something that can be worked with, or something that still needs to be figured out?

If those pieces are there, senior year tends to feel steady.

If they aren’t, it’s not too late. It just means the next few weeks are going to matter a bit more.
