Fall college fairs are one of the most valuable (and underrated) opportunities in the college search process. But most students walk in unprepared, ask the wrong questions, and walk out more overwhelmed than informed.
With a little planning, college fairs can help students build their college list, connect with reps, and walk away with real clarity, not just another tote bag and some brochures.
Here’s how to make the most of college fair season.
Before the Fair: Do Some Homework
Most fairs publish a list of colleges in advance. Spend 20–30 minutes reviewing that list and highlighting the schools that interest you. Then, look up a few quick facts about each: location, size, programs that catch your attention. This gives you something specific to talk about with the rep—and makes a much stronger impression.
Pro Tip: If you’re attending with a friend, split up and compare notes later. You’ll cover more ground and pick up insights you might not have found on your own.
During the Fair: Ask Better Questions
College reps are there to meet students, but most hear the same basic questions over and over. Instead of asking “What majors do you have?” (they have a website for that), try asking questions that show you’ve done a little research.
Here are five questions that will actually get you helpful answers:
After the Fair: Follow Up the Right Way
If you had a good conversation with a rep, send a quick email the next day. Thank them for their time, mention something you talked about, and ask any follow-up questions you didn’t get to. It’s a small step, but it shows interest, maturity, and initiative.
This is also a great time to update your college list. Did you find a new school to add? Cross one off the list? Make note of anything you learned so it doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.
Bonus Tip for Parents
If your student is hesitant to go, offer to walk the fair with them, but let them take the lead. College fairs are a great way to encourage independence and help students build confidence in talking to adults. You’re still part of the process, but this is a chance for them to start owning it.
