When is the best time to start the college planning process?
While we work with students at all stages of high school, we find that starting in the freshman or sophomore year allows for the most stress-free experience. This gives us ample time to build a strong resume, explore career interests, and stay ahead of application deadlines.
How is Class 101 different from a high school guidance counselor?
High school counselors are wonderful resources, but they often have hundreds of students to manage. Class 101 provides one-on-one, personalized attention. We dive deep into every detail—from list building and essay coaching to scholarship applications—ensuring nothing falls through the cracks.
Which test should my student take: the ACT or the SAT?
There is no “better” test; it really depends on the individual student’s strengths. We provide diagnostic tools to help determine which test fits your student’s learning style best, and then we create a targeted prep plan to boost their scores.
How do you help students improve their GPA?
While we aren’t a traditional tutoring service for specific classes, we focus on “Academic Advisor” skills. We help students with time management, study habits, and course selection to ensure they are challenged but successful in their high school curriculum.
Does Class 101 help with finding scholarships?
Absolutely. One of our core goals is to help families make college more affordable. We work with students to identify “merit-based” scholarships and guide families through the complexities of the FAFSA and other financial aid forms.
What if we aren’t sure what my student wants to major in?
That is perfectly normal! We use career interest assessments and guided conversations to help students discover their passions. Finding a direction early helps save time and money by avoiding major changes once they are already in college.
Do you offer remote sessions or only in-person meetings?
We believe the best results come from personalized, face-to-face interaction, so we are primarily an in-person, one-on-one service. However, we understand that family schedules can be busy, so we do offer Zoom meetings as needed to ensure we stay on track with your student’s goals.
When should we start going on college tours?
It is never too early to get a student on a college campus to start “feeling out” different environments, but we recommend starting visits in earnest during the 10th grade. This allows students to explore different sizes and types of schools before the high-pressure application season of senior year begins.
Do you work with student-athletes looking for recruitment?
Yes! We help student-athletes navigate the specific requirements of the recruiting process, including NCAA eligibility center registration, creating athletic resumes, and strategizing communication with college coaches to help find the right athletic and academic fit.
