You’ve worked three years to build an impressive resume and anchor a solid GPA. So, what’s next? Letters of Recommendation.
College admissions committees can only see a flat list of accomplishments on paper. They want to see the full, in-color, HD portrait of you as a student.
This is where letters of recommendation come into play. These testimonials allow colleges to see you through the lens of other educators and leaders. Their assessments are essential.
So, how do you go about getting these all-important letters?
1. Who to Ask
Compose a well-thought-out, curated list of the people who know you best. Find writers who can speak to your abilities, accomplishments, and character. A carefully selected group of references ensures you showcase a balanced, complete version of yourself to admissions committees.
Consider asking:
The key is to make sure these people know you and have interacted with you. They must be able to genuinely attest to your character and achievements.
2. How to Ask
This may be the most important step. Always plan ahead, giving your recommender plenty of time to work on your letter.
Waiting until the last minute can result in a mediocre letter. It can even lead to a polite decline if the writer feels they cannot fit it into their schedule. Ideally, ask as early as possible before the Fall rush.
The Strategy: Make the request in person to secure a commitment.
3. Painting Your Portrait
Although the writer knows you, their knowledge is often limited to their specific role. Your calculus teacher can speak to what kind of student you are in math. Your coach can discuss you as an athlete. On their own, these separate roles make for an incomplete, black-and-white portrait.
To help them paint a full-color portrait, provide your writer with a resume listing your:
4. Follow Up
Writing a solid letter takes time and effort. Once your recommenders submit their letters, send a handwritten thank-you note. It shows maturity, and is a great way to share your appreciation.
