How You Can Help Their 9th Grader Start Strong This School Year

Starting high school is a big step—for both students and parents. As a parent, this is a great time to help your 9th grader build habits that will set them up for long-term success. Here’s how you can guide them through a strong start.

1. Build Strong Habits Early
Encourage your teen to develop consistent study routines and time management skills. Help them create a weekly schedule that includes homework, study time, and breaks. As coursework gets harder, strong habits make a huge difference.

2. Strengthen Test-Taking Skills
Test-taking strategies are often overlooked until junior year, but 9th grade is a great time to start. Help your student learn to practice reading directions carefully, pace themselves, and review their work. Some Oklahoma schools offer early prep programs or workshops—check with your school counselor. At Class 101, we offer a High School Prep program that helps students develop these vital skills.

3. Get Involved Outside the Classroom
Oklahoma high schools—like those in Norman, Edmond, and Yukon—offer clubs, sports, and leadership programs that develop confidence and time management. Encourage your child to try something new and stick with it. In the metros, as well as some of our rural communities in the state, there are opportunities to get involved that are not tied to your school. United Way, local chambers, and Leadership Oklahoma are just some of the programs that may interest your student. We always make sure our students are aware of opportunities and engaged in those that fit their interests.

4. Connect with the Counselor

Schedule an early meeting with their school counselor. They can help map out an academic plan. Make sure you understand your course progressions and the variety of AP/IB and concurrent courses you can choose from in the future. We encourage our students to be strategic in their course selection, not only to meet graduation requirements, but to increase their competitiveness in the college application process.

5. Talk About the Future—Casually
Discuss your teen’s interests and possible careers. It’s not about picking a college now—it’s about sparking vision. We help students discover career options and understand the importance of researching colleges and universities to identify their best fit.

With your support, your 9th grader can build a strong foundation this year! Additionally, we are always here to help students from across the state.
