By the end of January, many families feel a mix of relief and pressure. Some deadlines are behind you. Decisions may be starting to arrive. And at the same time, it’s becoming clear that the college process isn’t wrapping up anytime soon.
This is a good moment to reset expectations.
One of the biggest misconceptions about college admissions is that progress happens in a straight line. In reality, the process moves in phases. January is a transition point, not a finish line.
For seniors, this is often the month when the focus shifts from applying to evaluating. Financial aid offers, scholarship opportunities, and spring decisions are still ahead. The work now is about asking better questions, comparing options realistically, and staying engaged instead of mentally checking out.
For juniors, January is when the process quietly becomes real. Grades, testing, activities, and college exploration all start to matter more. This is where momentum begins to compound, especially for students who are willing to be intentional rather than reactive.
And for parents, January is usually when the noise gets loud. Advice comes from every direction. Timelines feel blurry. It’s not always obvious which decisions are urgent and which ones can wait.
What matters most heading into February isn’t doing everything. It’s knowing what actually deserves attention next.
That’s exactly what we talk through during Open Office Hours.
On Monday, February 2, the office at Class 101 Waukesha-Brookfield will be open for drop-in conversations. We’re happy to talk about college decisions, spring testing plans, junior-year strategy, scholarships, or anything else on your mind.

Here’s the truth: January is not […]

October is when the college admissions calendar really heats up. Between Early Action, Early Decision, scholarship cutoffs, and priority deadlines, it can feel overwhelming for families to keep track of what’s due and when. The good news? With a little organization and a clear plan, students can avoid last-minute stress and make the most of […]
