What Juniors Should Be Doing Right Now (While Seniors Are Making Their Decisions)

This time of year is always fascinating to watch.

Seniors are posting acceptance photos. Families are comparing financial aid packages. Group texts are full of “Where are you going?” conversations. Some students feel relieved. Others are recalculating. A few are surprised by final costs in ways they did not anticipate a year ago.

If you are the parent of a current junior, this is your preview.

Every senior making a decision right now was a junior exactly one year ago. The financial conversations they are having this month were shaped by decisions made last spring. The college lists they are choosing from were built during junior year. The scholarship outcomes being compared were largely determined by GPA trends and testing strategy in 11th grade.

April is not just decision season. It is positioning season for the class behind them.

If you are a junior watching this unfold, here is what should be happening right now.

First, your college list should be taking shape in a serious way. Not a loose collection of names, but a thoughtful balance of fit, probability of admission, and probability of affordability. If seniors seem surprised by their options this month, it is often because the list was never stress tested in advance.

Second, your testing plan should be clear. Not “we’ll see how it goes.” A real strategy. Dates on the calendar. Preparation underway. An understanding of what score ranges change scholarship positioning. By the time senior year begins, your strongest scores should already be in place.

Third, financial conversations should be happening now. Seniors comparing aid packages this month are often discovering that some schools were never financially realistic. That realization is much easier to navigate in junior year, when there is still time to adjust course.

Fourth, summer should have a purpose. Essays will begin soon, but essays written without clarity about the list are often disconnected from strategy. A junior who enters summer with a finalized framework writes with more confidence and focus.

I have watched this cycle for years, both inside admissions offices and now working with families directly. The seniors who are making calm, confident decisions this month did not get lucky. They built clarity early.

If you are a current junior, April is your signal.

You are not behind if you are just starting to think about this. But this is the moment to move from casual conversation to structured planning. Waiting until fall compresses everything and increases stress.

We are now scheduling strategy consultations for juniors who want to enter summer with a defined college list, a testing plan, and a clear understanding of affordability. Our junior class is filling as families recognize that what they are seeing this month is a preview of their own decisions next spring.

If you want your student making confident choices a year from now rather than scrambling to compare surprises, April is the time to begin.

Is Your Student Busy… or Strategic?

When I worked in college admissions, I read thousands of activity lists. Some were long. Very long. Clubs. Sports. Volunteer hours. Honor societies. Camps. Competitions. Summer programs. The students were undeniably busy. But busy and strategic are not the same thing. There is a difference between filling time and building direction. I would often see […]

The Five Biggest Mistakes Smart Parents Make in 10th and 11th Grade

Over nearly two decades working in college admissions, I read thousands of applications and sat through more scholarship discussions than I can count. I watched families celebrate, and I watched families panic. The difference between those two experiences was rarely intelligence or work ethic. Most of the families who felt blindsided were thoughtful, engaged, and […]
