How to Use Winter Break to Boost Your College Application (Without Losing Your Vacation)

While there's plenty of snow outside, families near Class 101 Waukesha-Brookfield (Wisconsin) can stay ahead of the college search process!

Winter break arrives at the perfect moment in the college admissions cycle. Seniors are navigating final deadlines, juniors are beginning to think seriously about college lists and test prep, and everyone could use a little breathing room. The good news is that winter break provides just enough downtime for students to make meaningful progress, without sacrificing rest or family time.

The key is keeping tasks light and intentional. One of the simplest ways seniors can stay ahead is by spending an hour reviewing any remaining Regular Decision applications. A quick look at supplemental essays, recommendation requests, or transcript needs ensures nothing is missed when January deadlines hit. Students often find they’re closer to finished than they realized.

Winter break is also an ideal window for scholarship searching. Many local, private, and national scholarships have deadlines in January and February, and just one or two applications completed over break can make a big financial difference. A short list now can turn into real progress in the new year.

For juniors, winter break is a chance to take the first steps toward college planning without pressure. A single practice ACT or SAT, a short college search, or even drafting a first version of an activity résumé can set them up for a strong spring semester. December and January are also excellent months for campus visits, especially for families traveling for the holidays.

The goal isn’t to work nonstop, it’s to use small pockets of time to take steps that will reduce stress later. By using even a little bit of the break wisely, students can start the new year feeling confident, organized, and ahead of the game.

If your student would benefit from a winter-break plan tailored to their goals, Class 101 Waukesha-Brookfield is here to help.
